I recently tried to publish an aerial survey to my organisations Portal using the copy to server option. The publishing failed but the service definition and all the data was left in the content directory. Portal had no idea it existed and so I couldn't delete it through the web Web GUI. The only reason I noticed is because i ran out of disk space (due the the failed publishing).
To combat this I would like to see a utility that scans the Portal content directory for orphaned and redundant item folders. The utility could then give the option of deleting these folders.
