It would be nice to have the ability within ArcGIS for AutoCAD Plug-in to have the ability to use Basemaps in Paper Space, instead of only in Model Space. Our office has a lot of CAD maps that we would like to use the imagery basemaps with that have multiple paper space layouts.

Hi George,

Thanks for sharing your idea! In ArcGIS for AutoCAD version 400, we are able to use/print Basemaps in Paper Space. By extracting the Basemap (image service) to a local folder, we create an external reference to the CAD drawing.

Try this following steps:

  1. Add the image service
  2. Right-click on the image service and click “Extract”
  3. Provide a path to store the image
  4. [Observe] Type AutoCAD command “ER” to open the external reference panel, see an image reference has been added
  5. Go to paper space
  6. Click the print button.
  7. Export to PDF.

I hope this offers an alternative solution for you.

Whilst you can extract the data as an Image for paper space, after a while, that's a lot of images floating around taking up space.
Fine for a once off here & there, but less than ideal for day to day functionality.

Maps only display in model space due to the geographic nature of model space. Since Paper space does not represent a place on the earth we do not display them in paper space. If you need to see the map in papers pace you have two options.

1. Use a mode space viewport in paper space, this will give you a window into model space where you should be able to see the map.
2. Extract the map in model space and bring the inserted PNG version of the map into papers space.

Thanks for the suggestion!
