It would be nice if esri just charged $50 more per subscripton of AGO and did away with the credits.

I actually have the oppisit view. I think they should charge for credits, not users. I guess I have always seen AGOL as a poor mans ArcGIS Server, so that smaller orginizations can publish maps without the need of the full blown ArcGIS Server software. The "work" that ArcGIS Online actually does is storing cache data, and vector data, performing analysis etc. ESRI gets paid for work performed via credits. I dont think they should charge by user because additional users do not require more work. I think if we could have more AGOL users on our account then we would use more AGOL credits, but because AGOL restricts the number of users we decided not to use AGOL.

And I agree with lygismav's comment. I wouldn't mind paying for the work their servers have to perform or space they consume, but I don't like the idea of having to pay seemingly endless amounts of money to get users to be able to access services/maps we don't need to share publically. Right now, due to ESRI's licensing model of per user based, if I've got a bunch of people who need access to non-public services but wouldn't be doing much on the site, just occasional use, I can't use ArcGIS Online, nor can I use any of the webapp templates really since they're all set up to consume arcgisonline maps. I'd rather pay per credit for what I actually need the server to do, not have to pay for a bunch of users that only occasionally look at a few maps. Their current model seems to assume you're going to have primarily power-users on ArcGIS Online, which may be their ideal situation, but is not the reality in many organizations.
