Services hosted in both ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Server have the ability to query on a geometryType of 'esriGeometryPolygon.' It would be very useful if this parameter could be configured in the ArcGIS.com viewer to be the boundaries of one or more polygons from a feature layer within a webmap.
For example, a webmap may contain city-wide crime points and neighborhood polygons. The end desire may be to create a map (and possibly a registered layer) of only the crimes within the 'Standish' neighborhood. As the source data is updated, the map should stay in sync, necessitating a spatial filter.
To configure this, the user could:
- Access the filter dialog of the point layer (crimes)
- Choose an option to filter by geometry
- Choose a polygon feature layer (neighborhoods)
- Create an attribute definition on that feature layer to create the geometry to pass to the query on the service (where neighborhood = 'Standish').
