When looking for answers and solutions related to the ArcGIS Platform, you may have used Support.Esri.Com in the past. This site hosts the largest search collections on the and domains, returning content from the Support knowledge base, ArcGIS product documentation, the GeoNet community,, and other helpful repositories. 


To refine your experience when you're looking for answers, Esri recently updated the search experience on Support.Esri.Com by adding a new search engine and search features.


Search Features

The search page includes two filters, chronological sorting, the total number of results, and an option to select the number of results displayed per page.

Content Type Filter

The Content Type filter enables you to select a specific repository for your search results. For example, if you select Technical Articles, only results from the technical article knowledge base return.

Time Filter 

The Time filter narrows your search results down to a recent time frame, ranging from the past 24 hours to the past year. For example, if you select Past 3 Months, only content published or modified in the last three months returns. In the image below, the results are filtered to only display Patches and Updates content published in the Past 3 Months.

Chronological Sort

The Chronological sort orders search results by publish date. By default, search results are displayed in order of relevancy, but this feature can re-order the results by Newest to Oldest or Oldest to Newest within the selected time filter. For example, if you filter by Patches and Updates and sort by Newest to Oldest, the most recent content displays at the top.

Total Number of Search Results 

The total number of search results for the search query and applied filters displays under the filters and sort drop-down options. The new search engine limits the total number of results returned to 10,000 results. If a search query returns 10,000 results and the expected page is not included, please refine the search query or apply content and time filters.


Pro Tip: You can search for exact phrases by adding double quotes around the search text (for example, “Create buffers tool”). Searching with double quotes only works if all text is inside double quotes; if there is text outside of the double quotes, the quotes are ignored.


Results Per Page Selector

The Results Per Page selector displays up to 50 results on each page. For example, if you select 50 results per page, 50 results display instead of the default of 10 results.

What to Expect

Search results will be different with the new search engine. Search engines typically improve over time as the results are fine-tuned and we generate more content for better relevancy. For the localized Support websites, both English and translated content is returned in search results. If needed, you can also search with Google or Bing, which are not impacted by the updates.


How to Help Improve Search

With almost every new release of ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS for Server, there are changes that aim to improve software quality and performance; sometimes, these changes require you to update your workflows. The improvements and deprecations made for geocoding in ArcMap 10.5 and ArcGIS Pro 1.4 may break some existing workflows or require you to prepare before installing ArcGIS 10.5. In this post, we'll give you an overview of these changes. 

1. Address locators stored in geodatabases are no longer supported, as specified in the deprecation notice for ArcGIS 10.4 and 10.4.1. As such, you must move or copy the address locators from the geodatabase to a file folder before installing ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Server 10.5. By doing this, you'll avoid the following issues in ArcGIS 10.5:
  • Address locators currently stored in geodatabases do not display as inputs to tools nor are visible in ArcCatalog when viewing the geodatabase content.
  • Starting a geocode service published from an address locator that is stored in a geodatabase fails to create an instance and returns an error in the server logs.
  • Publishing an address locator stored in a geodatabase or an .sd file that references an address locator stored in a geodatabase directly to ArcGIS Server 10.5 will return an error in the server logs.

2. We made several improvements to the US Address locator styles, such as adding fields and reordering input fields used when building an address locator. However, these improvements break any existing workflows that use Python scripts and Model Builder models to create address locators. These issues occur without an error or warning message and render the address locators unusable. Furthermore, geocoding services created from these locators and used in web applications are impacted in ArcGIS 10.5.

To avoid these issues, update the field mapping in the scripts and models after installing ArcMap 10.5 and ArcGIS Pro 1.4 but before running the scripts and models. There are also additional output fields that display in the geocode result that are similar to the output fields of StreetMap Premium and the World Geocoding Service.

3. If it is necessary to continue using the US Address locator style from ArcGIS 10.4 to create address locators after installing ArcGIS Desktop 10.5, contact Esri Support Services to request access to the USAddress.lot.xml file.

  • Unless you’re a distributor on Global Support, the Support feature set in My Esri is disabled by default. Once you subscribe to Global Support, you should submit a request to the My Esri team to enable the Support feature set.

Are you unable to view the Support tab in My Esri? Can you see the Support tab, but not the buttons for Request Case or Chat with an Analyst? We can help.

The ability to view the Support tab is governed by the View Support permission in My Esri. Whoever assigns permissions for your organization (for example, your administrator or distributor) grants the View Support permission. Actions such as Request Case and Chat with an Analyst are available to users recognized as Authorized Callers in My Esri. If you do not see those buttons, My Esri does not process that you are an Authorized Caller.

When we launched Support on My Esri, we notified all Authorized Callers about the new site. If the Authorized Caller was a My Support user, and if we were able to match records between systems, we directly assigned Authorized Caller permissions on My Esri and sent an email with the following content:2-23-2016-12-40-22-PM.jpg

If we were unable to identify the Authorized Caller as a My Support user, we sent an email inviting the user to My Esri. That email contained a “token” in the “Connect to My Esri” link.
If you received the invitation, use the following steps to ensure you are an Authorized Caller in My Esri.
  1. Sign out of My Esri.
  2. Locate the "Welcome to Support on My Esri" email message containing the token.
  3. Click the "Connect to My Esri" link in the email message, which will redirect you to the Esri Accounts sign in page.
  4. After signing in, Authorized Caller permissions are added. You will now have Authorized Caller access in My Esri.

If you are an Authorized Caller for your organization and did not receive either of the migration emails, please contact Esri Customer Service or your distributor.

Additionally, Esri Customer Service can enable Support permissions in My Esri.

Update on January 14, 2016:

Windows 10 support begins at ArcGIS 10.3.1.

Other than the products currently certified, Esri recommends that you do not install Windows 10 for use with Esri products until testing and certification are complete.

ArcGIS Pro is not currently certified for production use on Windows 10, but we fully anticipate supporting Windows 10 for ArcGIS for Desktop 10.4 and ArcGIS Pro 1.2, which are scheduled for release in Q1 2016.

ArcGIS Runtime SDKs for .NET, Java, and Qt will be certified for the upcoming Quartz release in 2016. The Quartz release of the ArcGIS Runtime SDK for .NET will include a new API to build Universal Windows Platform (UWP) applications for Windows 10. ArcGIS Runtime SDKs version 10.2.6 and below will not be certified with Windows 10.

This blog post provides updated information regarding deprecated features of ArcGIS 10.3.1 and the upcoming ArcGIS 10.4 release. ArcGIS 10.3.1 was released in May 2015.Note: Along with product updates, the name of this document has also been updated to reflect the content.

Here are some of the major changes in the update for ArcGIS 10.3.1 and the upcoming ArcGIS 10.4 release:

  • At 10.4, ArcObjects .NET will ship with the .NET Framework 4.5 as the default. All developers using ArcObjects .NET are encouraged to begin the transition from existing .NET-based extensions to the .NET Framework 4.5 in anticipation of this change.
  • Portal for ArcGIS 10.3.1 will be the last release to support Internet Explorer 7 and 8.
  • Beginning with the December 2015 update, ArcGIS Online configurable application templates and the map viewer will no longer support Internet Explorer 7 and 8.
  • ArcGIS 10.4.x will be the last series of releases to support Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.x.
  • ArcGIS 10.3.1 and ArcGIS Pro 1.1 will be the last releases to support the Oracle 10g R2 10.2.x series of releases.
  • ArcGIS 10.4 will be the last release to support the Oracle Spatial GeoRaster data type.
  • ArcGIS 10.3.1 will be the last release to support Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2.
  • ArcGIS 10.3.1 and ArcGIS Pro 1.1 will be the last releases to support the PostgreSQL 9.1.x series of releases.

Following up on a previous post regarding obtaining license files for creating enterprise geodatabases, we want to provide more insight into how this can be done if you don't have access to the server installed with ArcGIS for Server or if you don’t have ArcGIS for Server installed at all. Since enterprise geodatabases use the ArcGIS for Server license, there are a few options for you.

The Create Enterprise Geodatabase or Enable Enterprise Geodatabase tools create enterprise geodatabases—this has been the case since the 10.1 release. Both these tools have an input parameter for 'Authorization File', where you supply the ArcGIS for Server license information to authorize the geodatabase.

Valid inputs are:
  • A keycodes file that includes the ArcGIS for Server license information
  • An .ecp file that includes the ArcGIS for Server license information

In most cases, you have access to the keycodes file after authorizing ArcGIS for Server Enterprise. However, if you do not have access to this file or you did not install ArcGIS for Server, use one of the following methods to obtain a valid input file for the 'Authorization File'. Keycodes file

To generate a keycodes file without configuring ArcGIS for Server, use the SoftwareAuthorization.exe installed with ArcGIS for Desktop.Step 1: Obtain the ArcGIS for Server ECP number

From the MyEsri website, obtain the ECP number for ArcGIS for Server Enterprise. Find this number by logging into MyEsri and navigating to My Organizations > Licensing > Authorizations. Filter by the product name, 'ArcGIS for Server', and select the Product Name to view the authorization number. Use this number in the Software Authorization wizard.mjarman.pngStep 2: Use the Software Authorization Wizard

Navigate to the Software Authorization wizard at the following location:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\ArcGIS\bin > softwareauthorization.exe

Use the following options to complete the Software Authorization wizard:
  1. Authorization options: I have installed my software and need to authorize it
  2. Product to be Authorized: ArcGIS for Server
  3. Authorization Method: Authorize with Esri now using the Internet
  4. Software Authorization Number: Use the ArcGIS for Server ECP number from MyEsri

After using the Software Authorization wizard, browse to the following location for the keycodes file (in this example, we generated a 10.3 license file).

C:\Program Files (x86)\ESRI\License10.3\sysgenPhysical .ecp file

To generate a physical .ecp file that serves as a valid input to the Create Enterprise Geodatabase or Enable Enterprise Geodatabase tools, use additional licensing forms through the MyEsri website.

Navigate to My Organizations > Licensing > Authorizations > Additional Licensing Forms > ArcSDE 10 & ArcIMS 10 Authorizations form.mjarman2.png

Don't worry if you don't have access to a server or if you don't have ArcGIS for Server installed; use either of the methods listed above to obtain license files for your enterprise geodatabase.

Query layers were first introduced at the 10.0 release primarily to allow ArcMap to integrate data from databases that do not contain the system geodatabase repository tables. Think of query layers as a method for accessing database objects that are not geodatabase-aware, without having to go through the process of registering the objects with ArcSDE or the geodatabase.

When first released, the only way to create a query layer was in ArcMap using the Add Query Layer tool, which also required a special connection file (.qcf). This file was required for ArcGIS to connect to databases that did not have a geodatabase component. Native access to both spatial and non-spatial database objects through the ArcGIS client application allowed for the ability to integrate a wider spectrum of data into GIS projects, and provided the ability for modification to include a specific subset of data – similar to a definition query and/or a database view.

With the ArcGIS 10.1 release, new functionality was added to make database connections native in ArcGIS, which eliminated the need to create the query connection file (.qcf) when building query layers. Query layers evolved from something that could only be manually built to a behavior that automatically occurs when accessing database objects that are not geodatabase-aware through a database connection file (.sde) in ArcGIS. In other words, query layers are generated dynamically by adding non-geodatabase objects to ArcMap via drag and drop from the Catalog window.What is a query layer?

Are query layers read-only?

Query layers are read only in ArcMap. At the 10.1 release, ArcGIS Spatial Data Server (SDS) services were introduced, which allowed the publishing of database data in an editable feature service. At 10.2, ArcGIS for Server feature access enabled map services were enhanced to allow data to be published from database connections that didn’t contain the geodatabase system tables. This opened up the ability to edit query layers via an ArcGIS for Server feature service and eliminated the need for the ArcGIS Spatial Data Server (SDS).Ability to edit query layers:
10.1Yes – via SDS service
10.2Yes – via feature access enabled map service

To edit the data at 10.1, create a map that contains your database data, and publish that data to the ArcGIS Spatial Data Server service.

NOTE: To publish editable feature services via SDS, ensure the layer is not contained within a geodatabase.

Beginning with ArcGIS 10.2, you should use ArcGIS for Server feature services to publish data from supported database management systems. This allows you to edit query layers via the feature access enabled map services, and takes the place of ArcGIS Spatial Data Server feature services (which have been deprecated). These workflows are intended for databases that do not have the geodatabase system repository tables populated; I like to call these NON-geodatabases.

NOTE: When authoring feature services using enterprise or workgroup geodatabases, all data must be registered with the geodatabase. This means that if you have query layers or spatial tables contained within a geodatabase that are not registed with the geodatabase, you will experience errors in analyzing when preparing to publish. Your options are:
  • Register the spatial tables or query layers within the existing geodatabase, creating feature classes
  • Publish the feature service from a NON-geodatabase (a database that is not enabled with the system repository tables)
  • Publish query layers from a map service and overlay these with feature service layers in a web map

Database views are not supported for publishing via feature services within a geodatabase because they cannot be registered with the geodatabase.

How to create a query layer

A query layer can be created manually in ArcMap by building a query against objects that exist within a geodatabase or a database that does not contain the geodatabase system repository tables. You should use this method to create a query layer if you need to define a subset of data. For example, when working with a layer that contains a large number of features, you should use the Add Query Layer tool and include a 'where' clause that restricts the number of features that will be included in the query layer.
  • Build a Query Layer manually using the ‘New Query Layer’ dialog in ArcMap: File > Add Data > Add Query Layer

A query layer is created when the layer/table that is not registered with the geodatabase is added to ArcMap via these additional methods:
  • Starting at 10.1 - Drag and drop a database layer into ArcMap from ArcCatalog or the Catalog window in ArcMap –The ArcMap Layer properties will display a Data Type of ‘Query Feature Class’ within the source tab
  • Using the Add Data button within ArcMap to add data from a database
Creating a query layer

Display behavior of database data in ArcGIS

ArcGIS for Desktop reads the layers in a database that contain feature geometry and displays them within ArcCatalog. How these appear in the Catalog tree changed starting at the 10.1 release. When data is viewed in ArcCatalog or the Catalog window in ArcMap, a new icon is displayed. MJarman02-Icon1.pngThis icon indicates that the object is a non-geodatabase aware/registered table with a spatial component/column.
  • Dragging a database layer with this icon into ArcMap would create a query layer where the feature geometry is discovered and rendered.
  • Double-clicking this object within ArcCatalog will discover and change the icon to a feature class icon for the specific geometry type that is stored in the geometry column.
  • Within ArcMap the layer will display similarly to a feature class, but checking the layer properties source within ArcMap reveals the Data Type of Query Feature Class.

Important things to note about query layers:
- Query layers only persist within the map document that they were created in
- Query layers do not require a geodatabase
- Query layers are read-only in ArcMap when added directly from a database connection
- Currently, query layers are only editable when accessed via certain types of services and datasources:
  • 10.1 – Spatial Data Server feature access enabled services can edit query layers
    • This functionality only existed for one product release as it was incorporated into the feature access enabled map service at the 10.2 release
  • 10.2 – Query layers can be edited as part of a feature enabled map service published from databases (not enabled with the geodatabase system repository tables)

- .qcf files are query connection files that were generated for the 10.0 release to allow the connection to a non-geodatabase-aware relational database to build a query layer. Starting at the 10.1 release these were no longer needed, but continued to work.

With the release of 10.2 and plans to deprecate the ArcSDE command line tools, you may be wondering how current tasks that use these tools can be completed elsewhere. I wanted to share some workflows that have alternate user interface tools in ArcCatalog/ArcMap that will make transitioning as seamless as possible.

If you are a frequent visitor of the ArcSDE Administration Command reference you may have noticed within the latest versions of the command line reference, there are numerous areas that include a little globe to indicate alternate or recommended workflows:globe.jpg

NOTE: There are no web-based versions of the ArcSDE command line reference for 10.1 and 10.2, but it can still be accessed on the server on which the application server/command line tools are installed.

In order to put a nice spin on delivery I will use a ‘Do This, Not That’ theme with a list of tasks within the Enterprise geodatabase that have alternate solutions or tools. I have also thrown in a few tasks that may not be directly related to the command line, but which have new recommended workflows.

Create an Enterprise geodatabase:

Use the Create/Enable Enterprise Geodatabase tool instead of using the ArcSDE Post Installation Wizard

This may seem like a no-brainer since the ArcSDE Post Installation Wizard was deprecated at the 10.1 release, but I thought this would point you in the right direction (or at least humor you).

Recalculate the layer extent:

Use the Feature extent tab within the layer properties of ArcCatalog instead of the sdelayer -o alter -E calc command line tool.

Recalculating the XY extent can now be done within ArcCatalog using the Feature Extent tab of the Layer Properties. This tab was added at release 10.1 for the ability to administer the XY extent of layers.

Create a multi-versioned/versioned view:

Register as versioned instead of using the sdetable -o create_mv_view command line tool.

Note that the terminology for multi-versioned views has transitioned to versioned views at the 10.1 release and how they are created has changed. Registering data as versioned starting at version 10.1 will automatically create a versioned view.

What if your data is already versioned and doesn’t have a versioned view created?
    • At version 10.1, the Create Versioned View tool can be used if the data was already versioned prior to upgrading and doesn’t currently have a versioned view created.
    • At version 10.2, the Create Versioned View tool is removed. Use the ‘Enable SQL Access’ context menu for these instances where the object does not have a versioned view.

Place a layer in load only or normal IO mode to bulk load data or rebuild the spatial index:

Use the Layer Properties Index tab, or the Remove/Add Spatial Index geoprocessing tool instead of the sdelayer –o load_only_io/ normal_io commands.

Starting at version 10.0 the Add / Remove Spatial Index (Data Management) geoprocessing tools are available.

View the spatial column of a table that is not registered with SDE or the geodatabase:

View in Database Connections in ArcCatalog or drag/drop into ArcMap as a query layer (feature discovery) instead of using sdelayer -o register

In previous releases, database tables that contained spatial types needed to be registered with ArcSDE for their spatial column to be accessible. This resulted in the table displaying as a feature class after registration. At version 10.1, tables that contain geometry types such as Oracle Spatial and SQL Server Geometry are accessible through ‘Database Connections’. These tables will be displayed with a table icon with a square. Double-clicking will connect and determine/discover the geometry type and the icon will change to a feature class representing the geometry type.db-connections-icons.jpg

If needing to take advantage of geodatabase functionality, you can register the feature classes/tables with the geodatabase, which will also registers them with the ArcSDE system tables during the process.

Managing connections:

The Geodatabase Administration tool is new at 10.1 and can be accessed by right clicking on the geodatabase > Administration > Administer Geodatabase context menu item. One of the many uses for this tool is that it provides a user interface to view and interact with user connections. Keep in mind that certain permissions must be granted to view/disconnect users.   • View currently connected users for geodatabase / view locks:

Use the Connections and Locks tab within the Geodatabase Administration tool instead of using sdemon –o info –I users/locks
  • Prevent new connections to the geodatabase:

Prevent new connections to the geodatabase in geodatabase Properties > Connections tab instead of using sdemon -o pause/resume
  • Disconnect users from the geodatabase:

Use Geodatabase Administration tool > Connections tab > Disconnect instead of sdemon -o kill

Importing datasets to the Enterprise geodatabase – shapefiles and coverages:

Use the Feature Class to Feature Class (conversion) geoprocessing tool instead of shp2sde –o create command line tool.

This geoprocessing conversion tool can be run in batch mode or scripted in ArcPy to import shapefiles into the geodatabase. If there is a further need to adjust the field mapping within the tool, use the arcpy.FieldMappings class.
