About the Course
The Location Advantage is a free, instructor-led massive open online course (MOOC) offered by Esri. The course lasts six weeks and requires a minimum of two to three hours of study per week. Weekly course sections consist of videos by the course host and Esri staff members, a video demonstration, a hands-on exercise, a quiz, a class poll and discussion, and supplementary resources. Students receive free access to Esri’s cloud-based mapping and location analytics platforms, ArcGIS Online and Business Analyst Web App during the course. A certificate of completion will be awarded at the end of the course.
When is the next offering of The Location Advantage? How do I register?
The master calendar for all the MOOCs is hosted at the Esri Academy site. Scroll down to see upcoming courses. You can register, once you've signed in with your Esri credentials, on the course description page.
Is there anything new in the April 2017 and later offerings of the course?
While the course content has not changed substantially, the offerings of The Location Advantage after April 2017 touch on new tools in Business Analyst Web App. The hands-on exercises now include work with infographics and the site suitability tool, and the use of a story map as a presentation tool.
Will I get a certificate for the MOOC?
Students who complete the course in its entirety will receive a certificate of completion.
How much do I need to know about GIS?
The MOOC has no prerequisites, but some familiarity with GIS concepts may enhance your experience.
What software will I use? What are the system requirements?
All MOOC students will have access to ArcGIS Online and Business Analyst Web App for the duration of the course. Your browser will need to meet the Business Analyst Online system requirements.
Can I take the lessons at any time? Are there weekly deadlines?
You are free to work at your own pace. The course includes six sections with video lectures, hands-on case studies, quizzes, and discussions. Sections are opened weekly. Expect to spend a minimum of two to three hours on each section. To earn a certificate of completion, all sections must be completed within two weeks of the class end date. Please see the Dates to Remember section in the course Dashboard for details.
How long will I have access to the content after the MOOC ends?
You may have up to two weeks after the course end date to finish the exercises. Please see the Dates to Remember section in the course Dashboard for details. After the date noted, software access will end and the course materials will be closed. You are welcome to retake the course by registering for a subsequent offering.
Will the MOOC show up in my Esri training history?
Yes. Certificates from all Esri MOOCs are available via your My Learning Activity page. If you believe a certificate for an Esri MOOC you completed on the Udemy platform (2014-2017) is missing from your page, contact us via the form at the bottom of this page. Please include your name, your username and the name and date of the course. We'll find it and add it to your page.
