Subject/topic of class/group you assisted your collaborator with: Rutherford County GIS Online Maps and Why Geography Matters
Approximately how many students were engaged in GIS activities through this collaboration: 25
How did you connect with your collaborator? Mrs. Craig was my youngest daughter's home room teacher.
Describe your collaboration process. Over the course of the school year, Mrs. Craig and I had chatted about giving a hands-on demonstration about how Rutherford County GIS uses GIS to solve problems. In the past, I have made maps for other teachers at Black Fox and given GIS related talks during Career Week.
Describe the tasks you assisted your collaborator with. I demonstrated how to use the Internet to view their communities through our GIS website: http://gis.rutherfordcountytn.gov/ and through RC GIS ArcGIS Online maps and applications. The children loved looking up their addresses and seeing what their homes looked like from our aerial imagery.
What available resources, if any, did you use or help your collaborator use to implement GIS in K-12 education? I shared information how to use the free and publicly available resources as a teaching aid through ArcGIS Online.
Did you develop any new educational material or GIS activities through your collaboration? Not yet. We are still working on developing a classroom activity for the kids to use ArcGIS Online to create their own maps.
What did you gain from the experience? What do you think your educator collaborator and/or the students gained?
I enjoyed working with children and their teacher getting their input as users of our resources. It helps us design and develop user friendly resources for our community.
The educators now have another tool to use to explorer their communities helping children reach their full potential with a free tool that is useful inside and outside the classroom.
Any additional comments about your experience? I cannot thank Mrs. Craig and the children of her class for allowing me to stop by and share what I love with them. It was a honor to be with them.
