Some ArcGIS Earth 1.10 users who use PKI authentication within KML services may be prompted for a username and password instead of a PKI certification window. A fix for this is included in 1.10.1 and users can download and install the latest release here.

For more details see the KB article created to support users who have this issue, see

https://support.esri.com/en/Technical-Article/000023245

What is changing?

In the releases after ArcGIS Earth desktop V1.10, users will not be able to import 3D models in the format of .DXF, .X, .PLY, . STL, and .IFC.

Why is ArcGIS Earth team making this change?

Currently ArcGIS Earth relies on Runtime SDK for .Net, which uses the complete assimp library to support 40+ 3D file formats for use as model marker symbols for point features and graphics.

The assimp library is one of the largest third party libraries referenced by Runtime today and has a notable impact on the size of the Runtime binary on every platform. The purpose of this deprecation is to reduce the number of supported formats to reduce binary size and refine testing to a more reasonable, common set of model types.

Additional formats will be evaluated on user requests.

Feel free to email jdu@esri.com if you have any concerns.

The wait is officially over, ArcGIS Earth 1.10 is released, and KML editing is here!

In today’s world, city planners, engineers, and law enforcement need to quickly understand and visualize their environment to gain insight. The ArcGIS Earth V1.8 release is jam-packed with new capabilities. Interactive analysis tools in this release make visibility assessment easy — enabling you to make informed decisions without waiting for someone else to do geoprocessing. These tools can help identify threats in tactical operations, find vantage points that could be exploited, and best placements for observation points. Download from here.

Elevation Profile – Before hiking on your favorite trail, use the Elevation Profile tool to create a profile graph from terrain or surface data using Esri’s World Elevation Service or your own proprietary content.

3D Measure – The 3D measure tool empowers you to measure distances dynamically on terrain, buildings, or other 3D objects in the scene.

Line of sight Identify visible and non-visible objects in an area of interest with the line of sight tool. Create sight lines from a specific point in the scene or from the current camera position. With the From animation option, perform line of sight analysis along a selected line to help you determine visibility along a route. You will see how much coverage that a vehicle or drone could observe through the animated line of sight analysis.

Using line of sight capability to analyze sight view near half dome, Yosemite national park. Imagery data from Esri partner Vricon.

Viewshed Analysis - With viewshed analysis, adjust heading, tilt, horizontal, vertical, and range parameters to see the entire visible surface area from a sensor or human observer.  With the Animation option, you can preview how much coverage a moving object can see along a path. Uses of the viewshed tool include site selection for buildings, radio/cell phone towers, or parking structures, for example.  The tool could also be used for selection of survey locations and discovery of good security camera positions.

Data support

The release of 1.8 includes two new portal information items - Web scenes and Web maps. Use web scenes and web maps to organize content in Portal for ArcGIS or ArcGIS  that can be shared across web and desktop tools.  You can also load Feature collections layer. And you can use tile package for ground elevation surfaces.

Improved Usability

ArcGIS Earth intends to deliver a game-like immersive experience. Recently, we improved the user experience by adding bookmarks, the new exploring mode, and capability to customize the start-up view. Some of the other updates include display of measurement on line segments while drawing, geosearch with multiple geocoders, and identify for scene layers. Users can also access ArcGIS Earth from the Microsoft Store.

All of this capability is in your hands to help you dive in and interact with your 3D content instantly.

This is just a taste of the goodness in ArcGIS Earth 1.8. To find more about what is in this release, visit our website.

In addition to this release, we have released ArcGIS Earth for Android mobile devices in Alpha. Try it out from the Early Adopter Community or the Google Play Store.

ArcGIS Earth has been well received since we launched it, helping to deliver GIS capability for all kinds of users, from students to scientists. We've been working to put the easy-to-use capability of ArcGIS Earth into the hands of our users. This week, we're releasing a mobile version of ArcGIS Earth for Android devices to our Early Adopter Community and Google Play Store. The ArcGIS Earth Android is optimized to let you quickly browse 2D and 3D content, both offline and .

The mobile version of ArcGIS Earth allows users to

  • Browse 2D and 3D content from an Android device.
  • Collect and share information in the field.
  • Perform interactive 3D analysis.
  • Simulate walking in a 3D scene.

Here are some of the ways these capabilities work:

Browsing 2D and 3D Content from an Android Device - You can connect to ArcGIS  or ArcGIS Enterprise and add 2D or 3D data to a mobile device. The ArcGIS Earth app for Android currently supports feature services, image services, scene services, and map services. For users in unfavorable environments, such as those working in the field, ArcGIS Earth supports the capability to add scene layer packages and tile packages saved in your device's local storage.

Collecting and Sharing Your Information in the Field - We introduced the Tour feature to help you collect and share information. You can quickly play a tour with photos in your album, showcase what you've seen along a journey, or point out where you have been during a fieldwork assignment. We have an example that shows a recent trip along a hiking trail near the Great Wall of China. You can also add place markers, and add edits.

ArcGIS Earth Mobile Tour feature - YouTube

Performing Interactive 3D Analysis - You can select the measurement tool to extract coordinates and run a quick visibility assessment—including line of sight and viewshed analysis—with interactive 3D analysis tools. A more robust version of these tools will be in ArcGIS Earth 1.8 for desktop users—coming soon!

Simulating Walking in a 3D Scene - With the sensors in your mobile device, you can even simulate walking in a 3D scene.

As an Esri mobile app, ArcGIS Earth embeds an extensible geosearch capability and basemap options from ArcGIS . Powered by ArcGIS Runtime SDK for Android, the ArcGIS Earth mobile app will continually explore emerging technology like virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), putting these tools directly into your hands.

All these updates are ready in the Early Adopter Community or the Google Play Store for free. We invite you to join Alpha program—please provide us with feedback and help us define how interactive 3D experiences via your mobile device can help you in your work or personal life.

The section below list known issues of ArcGIS Earth V1.6.1 (Build number: 1808).

1. Measure

  • The measurement is wrong when drawing polygon and circle across the 180°W/E longitude line.

2. KML layers

  • When export drawing point to KMZ, the text label sizes may not exactly as sized in Earth when drawn, and the label will conflict with drawings.
  • Saving drawings as KMZ can’t remember polygon orders in Table of Contents.
  • ArcGIS Earth didn’t support labels with some Asian characters.

3. Draw

  • The upper/lower vowel of Thai characters disappears in the label of draw point.
  • The custom icon can’t be previewed in the placemark edit panel if there is a space in the name of this picture.

4. CSV/TXT

  • The records will be lost if the field of the text file ends with commas when adding to ArcGIS Earth.
  • The CSV/TXT file can’t be added in ArcGIS Earth with HTTP protocol.

5. Vector Tile Basemap

  • The vector tile layer is not supported in ArcGIS Earth. If the basemap includes the vector tile layer, then it will be discarded.

6. Pop-up window

  • Only one point pop-up window can be invoked if there are many points in the same place.

7. 3D Effects

  • Elevation exaggeration is applied to extruded polygon and terrain measurement.

8. Tile Layer

  • Tile package disappears in TOC after changing the spatial reference.

9. Eyedropper

  • ArcGIS Earth will crash by pressing Esc key when using the eyedropper.

Notes:

  1. If you get proxy authentication error message, please try to open AGOL from IE to check if it works. ArcGIS Earth uses the default Internet Settings (IE) proxy, so if it works fine from Internet Explorer on the server, it should be OK from ArcGIS Earth as well.
  2. If you get black screen issue, please check whether your computer meets the requirements, especially at your graphics card and DirectX version.
  3. If you get messy basemap imagery issue, please check the proxy and firewall on your computer.
  4. If you can’t launch ArcGIS Earth after a while of use, please make a copy of your current workspace and then clear it.

ArcGIS Earth can aggregate both 2D and 3D spatial information. As a result, ArcGIS Earth was designed for organizations to have the flexibility to add content in a variety of ways. ArcGIS Earth is built on top of the ArcGIS Platform and gives users direct access to Esri’s collaborative web GIS infrastructure. ArcGIS Earth further extends access, via URL to the open source community. In addition, ArcGIS Earth users in the field who are disconnected from a network, can load and work with data (including basemaps and elevation) locally onto the globe.

Accessing content from ArcGIS Online

ArcGIS Online is a collaborative web GIS where ArcGIS Earth users gain access to publicly available content shared by Esri and GIS users from around the world in the Living Atlas. ArcGIS Earth users can further enhance this experience by subscribing to ArcGIS Online, opening access to premium content and much more.

ArcGIS Enterprise

Along with ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise is a key component of the ArcGIS platform. If you run your GIS from behind a firewall, in your infrastructure on-premises, ArcGIS Earth can access your organization portal(s) content directly and load this data on the ArcGIS Earth globe.

Accessible data types –

  • Map service
  • Image service
  • Feature service
  • Scene service
  • KML service

Local Files – Using ArcGIS Earth in the field, in a disconnected network environment

The lightweight ArcGIS Earth client also functions in a disconnected environment.  Data can be loaded onto a folder on a laptop, taken into the field and side-loaded into ArcGIS Earth. To view local file data from your computer or shared drive in ArcGIS Earth, choose the Add Files option on the Add Data dialog box.

Accessible data types –

  • Shapefiles
  • KML and KMZ
  • TXT and CSV containing location coordinates or addresses (geocode in ArcGIS Online and Enterprise)
  • Tile package
  • Scene layer package with file extension in. spk and. slpk

Basemaps and Terrain

ArcGIS Earth users also have the power to set the background geographic context and elevation reference by the same methods as adding data onto the globe. You can add all supported data types as a basemap, except shapefiles and CSV and TXT formats. Additionally, local raster data and elevation image services with LERC tile format can be added as terrain.

With the release of ArcGIS Earth 1.6, we are happy to announce that ArcGIS Earth Automation API is now available. See more from ArcGIS for Developers or the ArcGIS Earth homepage.

We heard many voices of support for an ArcGIS Earth API after the first release of ArcGIS Earth less than 2 years ago. Many of you wanted the ability to control and interact with ArcGIS Earth, including 2D and 3D contents on the globe. So, we designed the ArcGIS Earth Automation API to enable a seamless app-to-app communication experience.

What is the ArcGIS Earth Automation API?

The ArcGIS Earth Automation API provides a standard interface for third-party applications that support .NET. It is based on NetNamedPipeBinding Class (System.ServiceModel)  and provides fast, reliable on-machine communications.

What can you do with it?

With the ArcGIS Earth Automation API, developers can now build .NET extensions on top of applications. For example, you can extend your application to access resources from ArcGIS Earth, and automate or script ArcGIS Earth behaviors for 3D navigation and visualization.

Specifically, ArcGIS Earth Automation API allows you to:

  1. Get and set camera positions.
  2. Control fly navigations of the camera.
  3. Add layers to ArcGIS Earth from online or local folders.
  4. Manage your ArcGIS Earth workspace (add or delete layers).
  5. Take a snapshot of the current view.

ArcGIS Earth Automation API provides a focused experience. It gives you control over the scene and workspace of ArcGIS Earth. Esri will continue to add new, empowering features for a wider range of usage.

Try it now!

See what’s possible with the ArcGIS Earth Automation API. This sample demonstrates how to create an add-in for ArcGIS Pro 2.0 to synchronize the 3D scene views between ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Earth. As you can see below, by switching between preset bookmarks in ArcGIS Pro, we get a simultaneous view on the same SLPK data from both ArcGIS Earth and ArcGIS Pro.

To try this add-in, go to View Synchronization Sample and download the example codes to your local machine. Note that you need to build the add-in within your local development environment, and also modify the codes where necessary. For example, you can add callback more messages for duplex communications.

In certain circumstances, some ArcGIS Earth 1.6 users are unable to view KML content after checking on its visibility in the Table of Contents (TOC).

A fix for this issue is included in ArcGIS Earth 1.6.1.  Users can download and install the latest release of ArcGIS Earth here - http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis-earth to view all content including KML and enjoy all its new features.
