Community Tip: Selecting Mark Correct vs. Helpful on Responses to Questions

It’s a win when you get an answer from the community to your questionHelp others find your question and answer by returning to mark a response correct or by identifying if a response was helpful. Here’s how to decide which one to choose:

 Mark Correct

Choose a response to Mark Correct after you have tested the response that answered your question.

 Mark Helpful

If a response didn’t quite answer your question, but it was helpful to your issue, you can mark a response to your question as “Helpful.”

Community Tip: 5 Tips for Submitting or Commenting on An Idea

One of the popular features of The Esri Community is the ArcGIS Ideas place. ArcGIS Ideas is where you have an opportunity to suggest enhancements or innovations for Esri products. Here are some things to keep in mind when submitting an idea:

  1. Be Detailed: Explain your workflow, process, and the products you’re using.  If you can record or document the steps you’ve taken that led you to the idea and the outcome you’re seeking, it can help people understand your idea more clearly.

  2. Use Visuals: Add an image, .gif, or video demonstrating where you think the improvement could be made: A picture is worth a thousand words!

  3. Give Context: Identify what industry you work in and what sparked this idea in your workflow or process to execute a task.

  4. Add Impact:  If your idea were to be implemented, how impactful would it be? Would you save money, time, or other resources by having your idea implemented? Add a little impact statement to your idea.

  5. Apply A Category: Add a Category so that the right team sees your idea. An idea with no Category can get missed when teams review ideas, and an idea given too many categories becomes less focused and effective.

Comments are helpful additions to Ideas. If someone posted your idea already, be sure to comment with the same tips in mind after you vote on the idea.  For more information on Submitting Ideas, see the “Using Ideas” section from our GeoNet Resource Hub

Community Tip: Using #Tags

When asking a question or talking about your work in the community, don’t forget to reference what product(s) you’re using. The best way to include your product references is by tagging the product in your blog, discussion, or question within the body of your text. You can also categorize your post with tags. By doing so, you’re helping other members find your content that is related to a product or subject they want to focus on.  Learn how to tag your content.

Many of you might be aware of or have participated in our Introduce Yourself! thread over the past year. This thread has been very popular, and with over 300 replies, we have outgrown the current thread structure.

We have evolved the member welcome experience by creating a new space (GeoNet Member Introductions) dedicated to member introductions and welcomes. In the New space, each new introduction will be its own thread, allowing for better search-ability, and allowing more collaboration among members. We also included in the space additional resources to help new members get started on their community journey. Lastly, we moved the old thread into this space for historical view.

If you are new to GeoNet, we encourage you to post in this space. Our team will be moderating the space and responding to each thread with helpful information. If you are a seasoned member we encourage you to welcome new members as they post in this space.

Looking forward to collaborating with you!

Our platform vendor had scheduled our community instance to be upgraded on May 7th, between 7:00 PM -12:00 AM PDT.

During the upgrade window, the GeoNet Community will go down for approximately one hour. Our vendor cannot provide the exact time the community will not be available due to the way their upgrades are batched together.

A few of the bugs that will be fixed in this release include:

  • Intermittent issues with widgets failing to load
  • The broken help link in the drop down menu
  • The answered/unanswered question tiles not loading properly
  • Fixed the issue that caused some links and mentions to be poorly formatted
  • An already published blog can no longer be saved as draft when editing it
  • Along with a number of other back end/ admin level bugs....

Thank you for your patience during this maintenance window. If you have any questions or issues, please contact us at: geonet@esri.com

On January 18, 2019, the GeoNet Community team will begin the process of deactivating GeoNet member accounts that have been inactive for the last 3 previous years (2014-2017). This will allow us to manage the community more effectively and ensure our active member data reflects those who regularly engage and are active in the community. Going forward, this feature will be a permanent addition to our community management and we will continuously deactivate accounts as the 3-year anniversary of last logged in date is reached on any registered account.

What changes will I see in my experience?

If you have an active GeoNet account (logged in at least once over the last 3 years), there will be no noticeable changes to your experience. No action is needed since you’re an active member.

For member accounts that are inactive for more than 3 years, those accounts will be deactivated on January 18 and those members will not be able to access their account after that date.

  • Those accounts will be deactivated but not deleted and all content associated with those deactivated accounts will remain.
  • No content will be deleted during this account deactivation process.
  • Esri accounts will not be impacted. This deactivation will only impact GeoNet account access.

What should I do if I don’t want my inactive account deactivated?

If you think you might have an inactive account for more than 3 years and you would like your account to remain active, there are options.

  • If you can login to your previously inactive account before January 18, we recommend doing this because it will update your last account login date to a more recent date.
  • If you cannot access your inactive account and need help with your credentials, please contact the team at geonet@esri.com who can help locate your details.

What should I do if my inactive account was deactivated and I want it reactivated after January 18?

We can help you reactivate it. Contact the GeoNet team at geonet@esri.com.

What should I do if I am Esri staff or a distributor?

We have shared steps for Esri staff and distributors on internal channels. Contact the GeoNet team at geonet@esri.com.

Thanks, as always, for your patience and support while we continue to make improvements to GeoNet, The Esri Community.

GIS governance model

GeoNet member, K B, shares thoughts about the GIS governance model in the Government space, “I'm curious as to the approach others are using and won't delve into the specifics of the pros and cons as I see them,” and would like to hear from other members how their organization is structured.
