ArcGIS Pro is designed to integrate seamlessly with your Web GIS, whether your portal is ArcGIS Online or Portal for ArcGIS. ArcGIS Pro uses your active portal’s settings when possible for a consistent experience in ArcGIS Pro and your portal. This means that your experience in ArcGIS Pro, from your basemap gallery to your utility services are determined by your portal.

 

For many users, strict security requirements mean users have no access to the internet which includes the services available through ArcGIS Online. If you are working in an environment that is disconnected from the internet, additional considerations should be taken into account when installing ArcGIS Pro and setting up Portal for ArcGIS. By ensuring the following settings are set correctly you will avoid degraded performance and have the full suite of capabilities available in ArcGIS Pro at your fingertips.

 

NOTE: Making changes to a portal’s settings requires administrative access.

 

Disable Automatic updates

By default, ArcGIS Pro automatically checks for updates on startup. To prevent these checks from occuring, you can either turn this setting off during installation or through ArcGIS Pro after installation.

 

Disabling automatic updates during installation

You can either install ArcGIS Pro silently, setting the command line parameter CHECKFORUPDATESATSTARTUP to 0 or after installation by setting the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Esri\ArcGISPro\Settings to 0.

Disabling automatic updates within ArcGIS Pro

  1. If have not opened a project, click About ArcGIS Pro. If you have opened a project, click the Project tab.
  2. Click About.
  3. Uncheck Check for updates on startup.

 

Help System

By default, ArcGIS Pro launches the online help system. When working in a disconnected environment access help available offline by doing the following:

  1. Install the Offline Help from My Esri.
  2. If have not opened a project, click About ArcGIS Pro. If you have opened a project, click the Project tab.
  3. Click Options.
  4. Click General in the Application section.

Click Offline help from your computer (requires local help installation) in the Help system section.

 

Basemaps

By default, ArcGIS Pro loads the default basemap specified by the active portal when a new map is opened. The default basemap configuration in Portal for ArcGIS uses basemaps hosted on ArcGIS Online which are not available in a disconnected environment. You optionally change the basemap settings at an organizational level in your portal or at the Project level in ArcGIS Pro.

 

Change the default basemap for an organization

To ensure that all users in your organization have the same mapping experience, create a custom basemap gallery in your portal. All users that sign into your portal through ArcGIS Pro will have the same basemap options available as the portal map viewer.

  1. Create a public group to use for the basemap gallery.
  2. Create and share basemaps to the group.
  3. Set the basemap gallery and default basemap.

Change the default basemap option in a specific Project

ArcGIS Pro allows you to change the default basemap of new maps and scenes within a project. Use this option if you do not have administrative access in your portal.

  1. If have not opened a project, click About ArcGIS Pro. If you have opened a project, click the Project tab.
  2. Click Options.
  3. Click Map and Scene in the Application section.
  4. Choose either Custom basemap or None for the Basemap option.
  5. Click OK.

Elevation service

Elevation surfaces represent height values at every point across their extent and are used to determine the height of layers in a scene. In ArcGIS Pro, the elevation service used by new scenes is the default elevation service set in the active portal. Any image service that uses a Limited Error Raster Compression (LERC) can be set as the default elevation service in a portal.

Utility services

There are a number of additional utility services that can be set for your portal; geocoding, routing, network utility, and GeoEnrichment in particular can be used in ArcGIS Pro. By defining these services in your portal, you can ensure consistent results across your organization. If these are not set, local datasets can be used instead.
